Finding Motivation When You're Feeling Unmotivated
Have you lost your motivation?
Whether you’re looking to lose weight, maintain your progress or achieve a long-term goal, motivation is key to your success. If you’re feeling particularly unmotivated to work toward your goals, there are a few things that you can do to ignite the fire once again.
Let’s take a closer look at some of the best ways to find your motivation for weight loss and self improvement, especially when you’re feeling unmotivated!
Identify Why You’re Feeling Unmotivated
The first step to finding your motivation once again, is to determine exactly why you’re feeling unmotivated in the first place. If you can identify the reason as to why you’re feeling unmotivated, it may be easier to strategize a plan to get back on track!
If you’ve hit a plateau…
Plateaus are normal in every weight loss journey. In fact, they are to be expected! Weight loss is rarely linear and often looks different from one person to the next. With a plateau, you may experience a standstill when it comes to your progress, even though you are doing everything right.
With a plateau, the most important thing to note is that you must keep going. Once you’ve found your motivation to maintain your healthier way of living, continue with your exercise, healthy eating, good sleep patterns, reduced stress, and of course, communication with your weight loss coach.
With a little time, patience and determination, you’ll be back on track in no time at all.
If you’ve gained weight…
As mentioned above, weight loss is rarely linear. You may experience weeks or months of progress, only to have a minor setback and gain back some of the weight you have lost.
Let’s say it together, it’s okay to have a set back. It’s okay to gain back some weight. It’s okay to be kind to yourself and give yourself a little grace every now and again.
Take a beat. Give yourself a break, a chance to breathe and assess the overall situation. Can you identify any factors that may have contributed to your weight gain? Stress at work, a busy week with the kids or possibly navigating the holiday season.
No matter the reason, once you have had a chance to recoup and plan your next steps, it’s time to find that motivation to get back on track and achieve your goals!
If you’re tired or overwhelmed…
If you’re feeling overwhelmed or exhausted in your weight loss journey, know that you’re not alone. Making lasting lifestyle changes and sticking to them is easier said than done. It’s understandable that you might feel burnt out from time to time.
What’s important is what you do about these feelings of exhaustion.
If you have too many things on the go, aren’t nourishing your body with healthy foods or are experiencing feelings of stress, these could all be factors as to why you’re feeling unmotivated. With a few lifestyle changes, you can be back on track in no time at all!
If you’re too busy…
While life can speed up in the blink of an eye, it’s important to remember that your health should always come first. No matter how busy your lifestyle may get, your weight loss journey needs to maintain top priority status.
Because after all, if you don’t work toward your weight loss and healthy lifestyle, who else will?
If life becomes too busy to prioritize your health, wellness and weight loss, you may need to re-examine the factors that are pushing your weight loss journey to the side. By saying “no” to certain commitments, responsibilities or opportunities, you can in turn say “yes” to yourself.
Remember Your “Why”
Once you have identified why you’re feeling unmotivated, it can be much easier to make a plan and get back on track.
The first step is to remember why you got started in the first place. Perhaps you want to regain the ability to play with your kids, you have a major upcoming life event or your health could benefit from an improvement.
No matter the reason for beginning your weight loss journey, remembering why you decided to make a change in the first place can most definitely help you to find your motivation once more and get back on track.
Goal Planning
Every weight loss journey begins with a goal. Or in some cases, multiple goals!
As you find ways to spark your motivation once more, you may find it helpful to revisit some of your short and long-term goals. You may even want to adjust or add a new goal, if your expectations or ambitions have changed.
Once you’ve had a chance to really assess and streamline your goals, you may find the feelings of motivation naturally coming back to you!
Talk to Your Loved Ones
When in doubt, communicate.
Whether it be your family members, friends or other members of your support team, you may find it exceptionally helpful to check in with them. They can talk you through the hurdles you’re facing and remember why you began your weight loss journey in the first place.
From tough love to a little kindness and support, your loved ones will know the exact kind of feedback you need to get back into the swing of things and find your motivation once again.
